Betting Rules for 5-Card Stud Poker
The object of 7-card stud poker is to finish with the best hand and to win the pot. Due to the several rounds of betting and the large number of cards, the rules involved in this game are quite numerous:
1. In all poker games, and thus in 5-card stud poker, playing and betting moves in a clockwise direction.
2. Before the first set of cards is dealt, players must place their ante bet. The ante is dependent on the table’s limits - $10/$20 tables will generally have a $1 ante, while $0.50/$1 have no ante.
3. Four betting rounds take place, not including the ante round.
4. During the first round of betting, the player holding the lowest value up card starts the betting procedure. This first bet has to equal at least half of the minimum bet set for the game. In betting round that follow, the player holding the highest hand starts the betting. If two players are holding the same hand, the player to the left of the dealer goes first.
5. The stakes being offered at the specific poker table determine the limit or maximum bet for each betting round. For example, at a $2-$4 table, the limit on any bet is $2 on the first two betting rounds and $4 on the last two betting rounds.
6. The betting limit for the first two rounds is determined by the lower limit of the table. There is one exception to this rule when a player shows a pair after the 3rd street. In this case, all players are given the option to bet the higher table limit for the second betting round. If any player bets at the higher limit, all subsequent bets are at the higher limit. The last two rounds of bets are also at the higher limit.
7. Four is the maximum number of bets that a player may make in any betting round: bet, raise, re-raise and cap. Cap is the third raise in the round because at that point, betting is capped and can’t be raised any further. Once a cap has been placed, players can only call or fold.
8. In a betting round where a player has folded, the player to the left of the dealer is first to act.
9. During the showdown, the first person to show their hand is the person who most recently showed strength with a bet or raise. All five cards are used in a showdown and the player holding the best hand wins the pot. If multiple hands tie, the pot is split. |
